Hi-Flier was founded in 1922/23 by Harry A Sellers, who held several kite design patents. (I don't think there are many of us who haven't flown Hi-Flier kites at some time in our youth.) Reportedly, the company also produced RTF gliders from about 1935 to 1941.

Flying Good Times Business soared by 1923 the company had outgrown Sellers garage and was moved to a small manufacturing facility at 165 E. Marietta Street in Decatur, Illinois. Soon Hi Flier Kiter had a staff of thirty four employees and was producing an astounding 10,000 kites a day. Hobby stores throughout the world were soon placing orders.

In 1921 Harvey A. Sellers (1889-1976) started Hi-Flier Manufacturing Company from his Decatur home. The company grew through the years, and by the 1950s, millions of kids around the world were flying Hi-Fliers from Decatur, Illinois. The last Hi-Flier kite to fly out of the Decatur plant before the company closed was in 1981.

Hi-Flier as a brand name is still alive, but the company in Decatur, IL is long gone. A company called Galoob Toys now owns the trademark, making plastic deltas now under the Hi-Flier name. It's unclear when the Decatur operation ceased, but the paper kite business is extinct in this age of plastic.

The Alox Box Kites. Other than Hi-Flier, Alox was the only company to mass-produce box kites for the dime-store trade, and as best we know, they were the only company to mass-produce a box kite in plastic. Three SKUs exist in the sales literature: #240 was 29″ long, with cells 12″ wide, in printed paper. Sales sheet says 28″ long.

As indicated in the Scrapbook article, by the year 1939 (before I was born) Hi-Flier manufactured and distributed 15 million kites per year! The company, at its peak, also employed 200 people who did a lot of kite making. When I was a kid and lived with my folks in Hammond (20 miles east of Decatur), I would often fly kites and keep them up.
